The Night the Tunnels Flooded
St. Louis, deep in Prohibition. The feds came down the sewer lines with lanterns and pumps, and the water came with them. Every rat in the city did what rats do — they ran.
Five didn't. Tucked on a ledge under Franklin Avenue, a kid in a black fedora looked at the red glow coming down the tunnel and said the thing that started it all: Let 'em run. Whatever they drop, we keep.
By sunrise the tunnel was empty — except for five soaked rats sitting on everybody else's stash.
